Tennessee Highway Safety Office Recognizes 10 High Schools for Earning Gold Traffic Safety Awards through Reduce TN Crashes this School Year

TENNESSEE – On Tuesday, May 16, the Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO) recognized 10 high schools for their work as leaders in traffic safety education and awareness. Dyer County High School, Cumberland County High School, Clay County High School, Dickson County High School, Stone Memorial High School, Unicoi County High School, Obion County Central High School, Gibson County High School, South Gibson County High School, and Milan High School were each awarded the 2022-2023 Gold Traffic Safety Award for completing activities with the Reduce TN Crashes program. Each of the schools earned over 3,000 points and completed a combined number of over 386 traffic safety activities across the state. Each Gold school will be receiving an award and a gift card sponsored by the Tennessee Road Builders Association.

“The THSO is thrilled to congratulate the Gold Award-winning schools for overachieving in traffic safety education,” said THSO Director Buddy Lewis. “Their hard work directly impacts their peers and serves as inspiration for younger students who look up to them. We are proud to support the Reduce TN Crashes program and encourage upcoming high school students to join our mission to save lives.”

In addition, we want to highlight our top school, Dyer County High School for a record year earning over 25,000 points by submitting 112 traffic safety activities. The diversity of the activities submitted has grown every year and we are excited to be able to offer opportunities for schools to showcase the unique ways in which they get the message of traffic safety to their peers. Reduce TN Crashes would like to congratulate all of the high schools that participated this year.

“The Tennessee Road Builders Association advocates the interests of the Tennessee road building industry, and that includes road safety. These young drivers are the future and we want to support them in spreading the word about making smart, safe decisions behind the wheel. TRBA is excited that we can share in their success and thankful these teens are making an impact in their communities,” said Kent Starwalt, Executive Vice President.

ReduceTNCrashes.com, sponsored by the Tennessee Highway Safety Office, is a portal connecting schools with teen traffic safety activities. Activities allow local or national organizations and community leaders to work alongside students to further traffic safety education and awareness. Participating high schools began their fall semester by registering on the Reduce TN Crashes website. Each school then spent the school year selecting activities from the Reduce TN Crashes website, engaging their peers and community, and then submitting documentation of their completion of those activities to earn points and a spot on the Reduce TN Crashes leaderboard. At the end of the academic year, participating schools received a THSO certificate with a ranking indicative of the respective school’s placement: Bronze, Silver, or Gold.
